Illusionist Criss Angel is either a hopeless romantic or magically good at getting attention. And this was made clear as a crystal ball on Monday when Angel gave a shout-out to his “new girl” Cameron Diaz before he was enclosed for 24 hours in a clear box encased in cement for the ultimate daredevil stunt in NYC’s Times Square.
Just minutes before the cement box closed around him at 7:30 a.m., Angel, 39, announced, “This is dedicated to my new girl. You know who you are. I’ll be thinking of you.”
Says a source, “He didn’t mention her by name, but everyone knew who he was talking about.”
The box was then hoisted 40 feet above the ground, and was scheduled to plummet to the earth exactly 24 hours later.
The following morning, hundreds of fans gathered to watch his escape and a big screen showed Angel inside the box, kicking at the walls and dejectedly holding his head in his hands. When a countdown clock hit zero, the box was sent plunging to the ground, without anyone seeing him emerge.
The crowd went silent, but then erupted in cheers when Angel suddenly appeared atop the screen’s nearby scaffolding, waving to the crowd and with his hand across his heart.
After his stunt, Angel turned to the crowd and said, “I’d like to dedicate this escape to my girl ‘Trouble,’ a.k.a. Cameron. I love you baby. Have a safe trip to Europe for your Shrek tour.”
Angel has been dating Diaz for several weeks. Sadly, the actress couldn’t be there to greet her man as she was already on her way to Europe to promote Shrek the Third, but the couple got some quality time in last week.
On May 30, Diaz, 34, visited Angel at The Post Group, a Hollywood recording studio where the illusionist was completing some audio mixing for his A&E show Mindfreak, before they left to spend a quiet evening together.
“They seemed affectionate; nothing over the top but they were holed up in an edit bay together,” says an insider. “At one point they were holding hands.”
The lovebirds made their first public appearance on May 12, when they hit VH1 Rock Honors together in Las Vegas and later partied the night away with Diaz pal Drew Barrymore.
Two days later they took in a performance of the Cirque du Soleil Beatles tribute LOVE.
The following weekend, the Shrek actress returned to Sin City, where the couple had dinner at Social House and then got cozy on the dance floor at Body English at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
“They really, really enjoy spending time together but they are taking it one step at a time,” a source tells Usmagazine.com. “They both just came out of serious relationships so they don’t want to rush into anything. They are just feeling it out.”
Hmmmmmmmm. Is that cute or just creepy?
